Biography
Jonathan Kay Hoyle qualified at the London Bar in 1991. He practised at the commercial bar in London for three years and then in Paris for five years at the International Chambers of Commerce and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. Upon arriving in Sydney, he worked at Clayton Utz and then Mallesons Stephen Jaques before returning to the Bar in 2009.

Jonathan has a commercial and public law practice and a specialist practice in international law and international arbitration.

Jonathan’s domestic practice focuses on commercial and corporations disputes and judicial review. He has appeared, led and unled, in the High Court, Federal Court, Supreme Court, the Land and Environment Court and the Federal Circuit Court. He has also appeared in specialist tribunals, including the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal. He has appeared in a range of significant disputes and proceedings including acting for the liquidators of Trio Capital, the liquidators of Mariner Financial, NuCoal Limited, Energy Australia, SITA (Australia), Leighton, Xstrata Coal, Westpac, the Australian Taxation Office, the Minister for Immigration, the Australian Energy Market Commission and the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal.

In addition, Jonathan has appeared in many international arbitrations (both commercial and investor-state) in numerous jurisdictions around the world under a range of governing laws and institutional and ad hoc arbitration rules (including ICSID, ICC, LCIA, AAA, HKIAC, SIAC and ACICA). He has appeared in court-related challenge and enforcement proceedings here and other countries including India, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Sweden, the UK, Singapore and Hong Kong. He is a Fellow of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration. He is currently briefed in two ICSID arbitrations as counsel.

He now takes appointments as an arbitrator and recent appointments include sitting as the President of an UNCITRAL Tribunal (Singaporean and Chinese parties, seat Sydney) and as a co-arbitrator in an ICC Arbitration (Samoan and Cayman Island parties, seat Singapore).
